Credit Card Processing: How Does It Work?

Nowadays, you rarely see cash in people’s pockets. What you see are shiny plastic cards called credit cards. These are coded cards that one can use to pay and get paid. But how does credit card processing work? Let us discuss the three main processes which are: reading of the card, connection to network, and response from the bank.

Once you purchase something or pay for a service and if you pay through a credit card, what will happen first is the reading of your card through the use of a credit card terminal. It is an electronic device that will allow you to swipe or enter your credit card information. Your credit card information will be combined with the information of your purchase or transaction like the amount, time and date, and others. Some mobile credit card processing works the same way. After this, the terminal will connect to a network like Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and others and these networks will transfer the information to the bank that provided the credit card. The bank will then evaluate the status of the card and will give a response of either the transaction can be approved or declined. This information will go back to the network and back again to the credit card terminal. The terminal will then issue a receipt with the detail of the transaction. The process is quite fast and most often convenient especially if the transaction is easily approved. If you own a business, it is best that you have a card processing service. This will be convenient for you and your customers.
